In the series the whole Haruhi is so very important is because she caused a huge time quake (said by Mikuru)/alteration in data (said by Yuki)/activated ESPer powers (said by Itsuki). When this happened it seems like Haruhi sub-consciously did it. It seems she had revealed that she did it too. Itsuki says that once he and the other ESPers gained their abilities they knew about them and that Haruhi Suzumiya caused it (that is why some of them call her God). Nagato says that it's evaluation and if the Data Integration Thought Entity (the group she's a part of) were to get a grip of this technology they would be very far. Mikuru's agency states that they cannot travel farther back in time than three years ago.
What Suzumiya did is not really specified all the way, but we have a general idea of it. Although, she has no idea that she did it. Haruhi's powers have made it where they can come to together, and they did bacause she wanted them to.
